今日書くことは私の独断と偏見に満ちた内容です。
お付き合いいただけたら嬉しいです。

この２つの作品を読んで面白かったのは、内容はもちろん
「この作者は私と同じ時代を生きている人なんだ！」
ということが見えてきたからです。

お二人とも私と同じ1980年代生まれです。

だから、作品の中に描かれる違和感や理不尽さに、
「ああ、わかるなぁ」と思う場面がたくさんありました。

子どもの頃、私たちは学校で「男女平等」について学びました。

男だから。
女だから。

そういう区別はよくない。

男女雇用機会均等法という法律があって、
男性も女性も同じように働ける社会になっていると教わりました。

でも大人になって社会に出ると、そんな理想的な世界ではありませんでした。
それに「男女平等」って言葉、、なんか変ですよね。（それは長くなるので置いておいて）

例えば、結婚して
「夫と家事を分担しています」と言うと、
「旦那さん、えらいね！！！！！！！！！」
とビックリマーク10個くらいついてリアクションされる。

子どもが生まれて、
「今日は夫が子どもを見てくれています」と言うと、

またまた
「旦那さん、えらいね！！！！！！！！！！！！！！」
とこちらはビックリマーク100個くらいついてリアクションされる。

もちろん、ということは、当時（10年くらい前）積極的に育児に参加していた男性もどちらかというと
マイノリティでたくさん苦労があったと思います。
社会全体が変化の途中のスタートから２番目くらいの波の中だったのではないかと思います。

そう考えると、
作品の中に出てくる違和感や理不尽さは、
作者が見てきた現実でもあったのかもしれないなと思えます。

本を読む面白さの一つは、物語を楽しむことだけではなく、
作者が見ていた世界まで想像できることですが、
今回この２つの作品からは特にありありと想像できて面白かったです。

最近読んだ本で、
「この作者はこんな時代を生きてきたんだろうな」
と感じたことはありますか？
皆さんは同年代の作家さんの本を読んだことはありますか？

As I mentioned briefly in this week’s Notes, I wanted to expand on that post here in the newsletter.

The reason I’m writing about it here rather than in a public post is simple:

I thought, “This topic might be a little too quirky!” 😆

What follows is entirely my own perspective, full of personal biases and assumptions, so thank you for indulging me.

What fascinated me about these two books was not only the stories themselves.

As I read them, I kept thinking:

“These authors grew up in the same era that I did.”

Both authors were born in the 1980s, just like me.

Maybe that’s why so many of the frustrations, contradictions, and small unfairnesses described in their works felt familiar.

There were many moments when I found myself thinking,

“Ah... I know exactly what that feels like.”

When I was a child, we learned about gender equality in school.

We were taught that:

Because you’re a man.
Because you’re a woman.

Those shouldn’t be reasons to treat people differently.

There was a law guaranteeing equal employment opportunities, and men and women could participate equally in society.

At least, that’s what we were taught.

But when I became an adult and entered the workforce, reality wasn’t quite that simple.

And honestly, even the phrase “gender equality” feels a little strange to me now—but that’s probably a discussion for another day.

For example, after getting married, if I said,

“My husband and I share the housework,”

people would respond with something like:

“Wow! Your husband is amazing!!!!!!!!!!”

with about ten exclamation marks.

Then after having children, if I said,

“My husband is taking care of the kids today,”

the reaction became:

“Wow!! Your husband is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

with about a hundred exclamation marks.

Of course, looking back, that also means that fathers who actively participated in childcare at the time—about ten years ago—were still somewhat of a minority.

I imagine many of them faced their own challenges.

It felt like society was somewhere in the middle of a transition, maybe in the second wave of change rather than the first.

When I think about it that way, the frustrations and contradictions that appear in these novels may not simply be fictional observations.

They may be reflections of the reality the authors themselves experienced.

One of the joys of reading is not only following the story.

It’s also imagining the world the author lived in.

With these two books, I felt I could see that world especially clearly, and that made the reading experience even more interesting.

Have you ever read a book and thought,

“This author must have lived through a particular time and place”?

Have you ever read a novel by an author from your own generation?

・敬語
・報連相
・メール
・会議

これらに必要な日本語はあります。
でも、それを学ぶのは 「職場で求められるから」ではなく、
「職場で気持ちよく人と関わるため」 であってほしいです。

もしかしたら、 ただの「言い方の違い」なのかもしれません。

でも、どんな言葉を使うかで、 勉強する時に見える景色が違ってくると思います。 みなさんはどう思いますか？

Recently, I heard the phrase “Japanese required in the workplace,” and it really made me uncomfortable.

When I stopped to think about why, I realized something:
I see Japanese not as a tool for being evaluated, but as a tool for understanding and connecting with other people.

In the phrase “Japanese required in the workplace,” the learner is not at the center.

The workplace is.
The company is.
The receiving side is.

Of course, in practical terms, there are forms of Japanese that are important for work:

honorific language
reporting, informing, and consulting
emails
meetings

These skills matter.

But I hope people learn them not because “the workplace requires them,” but because they want to communicate comfortably with the people they work with.

Maybe this is just a difference in wording.
But I think the words we choose can change the landscape we see while learning.

という話をするとき。
「パエリア！」みたいに、
名前だけで伝わる食べ物もあります。

でも、
一般的によく知られていない食べ物だと、
名前だけではなかなか伝わりません。

そんな時に使えるのが、
「これ、伝わるかな〜」
「あー、うまく説明できないんだけど…」

というフレーズです。

外国語を話す時って、
“うまく説明できない状態”をどう乗り越えるかが、
かなり大事だったりしますよね。

でも、
「説明できない時の日本語」って、
教科書にはあまり載っていないんです。

もしかしたら、
今回のエピソードには
他にも使えそうな表現があるかもしれません。

From this weekend’s YouTube episode,
there’s one scene I’d really love you to pay attention to ✨

It’s the moment where Noriko-san tries to explain
“a sweet and delicious bread whose name she doesn’t know”
to me in Japanese.

Honestly, this is exactly the kind of conversation I want people to imitate through:
* mirroring
* dictation
* overlapping

and other listening practice methods 👀

For example,when someone asks:

“What’s a delicious food from your country?”
“Did you eat anything good on your trip?”sometimes just saying the name is enough.

If you say “paella,” most people can imagine it right away.
But when the food isn’t widely known,
the name alone often doesn’t communicate much.

That’s when phrases like these become useful:
“I wonder if this will make sense…”
“Ah… I’m not sure how to explain it, but…”

---

When speaking a foreign language,
a big part of communication is learning how to move through moments where
you *can’t fully explain something yet.*

But interestingly,
“Japanese for moments when you can’t explain something well”
doesn’t really appear much in textbooks.

There may be other useful expressions hidden in this episode too.

そこで、驚いたことがありました。
いつもプライベートレッスンでは、ゆっくり考えながら話すタイプの生徒さんが、
テーマを見て、すぐに意見を言ってくれたんです。
しかも、いつもよりスムーズに会話に参加しているように見えました。

（これを伝えると、ご本人も驚いていました👀）

理由はいくつかあると思います。

まず、テーマがはっきりしていたこと。
そして、普段から考えている話題だったこと。

でも個人的に一番大きいと思ったのは、
他の人の話を聞いて、「あ、そう言えばいいのか」
というヒントを、無意識に得ていたのではないかということです。

グループで外国語に取り組む面白さは、
「自分が話すこと」だけではなく、他の人の話し方や、
言葉の選び方を見られることなのかもしれません。

---

「まねる＝まなぶ」と言いますしね。
武道には「みとり稽古」という、見て学ぶ練習方法もあります。

今度のワークショップでも、「自分が話す」だけではなく、
他の人が「好きな本」「好きな漫画」「好きなアニメ」について話すのを聞きながら、会話のヒントを持ち帰ってもらえたらと思っています📚

Recently, I held a small trial conversation club for intermediate English speakers.

Half of the session was supposed to be in English, and half in Japanese, with everyone talking about the same theme.

(Although on this particular day, the English-speaking participant couldn’t join, so we ended up doing it entirely in Japanese 👀)

Something surprised me during the session.

One student, who usually takes time to think carefully before speaking in private lessons, started sharing their opinions almost immediately after seeing the topic.

And compared to usual, they seemed to join the conversation much more smoothly.

(When I mentioned this afterward, they were surprised too 👀)

I think there were a few reasons for this.

First, the theme was very clear.

Second, it was a topic they already had thoughts about in daily life.

But personally, I think the biggest reason was this:

while listening to other people speak, they were unconsciously picking up hints like,

“Oh, I can say it like that.”

What’s interesting about practicing a foreign language in a group may not be only “speaking yourself,”

but also being able to observe how other people speak and choose their words.

In Japanese, there’s an expression:

“Maneru wa manabu.”
(To imitate is to learn.)

In martial arts, there is also a training method called “mitori geiko” —
learning by carefully watching others.

In the upcoming workshop, I hope participants will not only practice speaking themselves,

but also pick up conversation hints by listening to other people talk about their favorite books, manga, and anime 📚

でも実際に話していると、どっちを使えばいいかわからなくなる。

これは語学学習あるあるです。
知識を増やすだけではなく、「使う経験」が必要です。

そして、私は「好きなこと」で練習するのが
一番強いと思っています。

例えば、「最近読んだ本で…」
と話していると、自然に「は」「が」を使う瞬間が何度も出てきます。
「は」と「が」だけではありません。

他の文法や語彙も一緒です。
「インプットしたこと」を「好きなことでアウトプット」

“Wa” is a spotlight.

Have you ever heard an explanation like this?

Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman.

↑
Here, we use “ga.”
It’s new information.

But then…

The old man went to the river,
and the old woman went to the mountain.

↑
Here, we use “wa.”

The Japanese particle “wa” works like a spotlight:

“Now we’re talking about this person.”

I think many Japanese learners have had moments where they hear an explanation like this and think,

“Ohhh, that makes sense!”

But when you actually start speaking,

you suddenly don’t know which one to use anymore.

This is a very common language-learning experience.

It’s not just about gaining knowledge.
You also need opportunities to use it.

And personally, I think the strongest way to practice is through things you genuinely like.

For example,

when you start talking about a book you recently read,

you naturally find yourself using “wa” and “ga” again and again.

And it’s not only “wa” and “ga.”

The same is true for vocabulary and other grammar points.

Taking something you learned as input,

and using it while talking about something you love.

Little by little,

“explained Japanese”

starts becoming

“usable Japanese.”

文法が正しく言えたときでしょうか。

「どんな本が好きですか？」と聞かれて、
魅力をそのまま伝えられる。

と、少しだけ話が続く。

そういう瞬間に、
「頭の中と、口が繋がっている」と感じられるのではないでしょうか？


実は私は「あらすじの説明」や「好きな映画の話」を
相手に「読みたいな！」と思ってもらうように話すのはあまり得意ではありません。

『鬼滅の刃』は何度も説明しているうちに
スラスラ伝えられるようになってきました。
多分無意識に「次はこの順番で話してみようかな、、、」と考えているかもしれません。

本の紹介はPodcastに出演させてもらうようになって、だんだん前よりはましになってきました。

鬼滅の刃は「沢山同じ話をする」ことで上手になり、
Podcastについては、準備をして、たくさん経験することでだんだんマシになってきたのだと考えています。

例えば、Podcastでは必ずその月に読んだ本の話をします。

どの本の話をするか決めて置いて、

・どんな話か
・どこが好きか
・どんな言葉が印象に残ったか

話せるように短い言葉をメモする時もあります。

ほんの少しの準備で、
「あ、今ちょっと前より上手に言えた」
という瞬間が増えていきます。

「友達と話すのにわざわざ準備するのもなぁ」と思うかもしれませんが、
準備をしていると、自信を持って、安心して
会話を楽しむことに集中出来ます。

When do you feel like you were able to speak Japanese?

Is it when your grammar is correct?
Or when you can speak for a long time?

When you’re having a conversation in Japanese,

and someone asks,
“What kind of books do you like?”

you can express what you like clearly.

---

“I recently read this book, and there was a scene where…”

and the conversation continues, even just a little.

---

In those moments,

you might feel like your thoughts
and your words are finally connected.

---

Actually, I’ve experienced this too.

I’m not very good at explaining a story or talking about a movie
in a way that makes the other person think,
“That sounds interesting—I want to read or watch it.”

---

But with *Demon Slayer*,
after explaining it many times,
I’ve started to talk about it more smoothly.

Maybe without realizing it,
I’ve been thinking things like,
“Maybe I’ll explain it in this order next time…”

As for talking about books,
since I started appearing on a podcast,
I feel like I’ve gradually gotten a bit better than before.

---

With *Demon Slayer*,
I improved by telling the same story many times.

With the podcast,
I think I’ve improved by preparing
and gaining more experience.

For example, on the podcast,
I always talk about a book I read that month.

I decide which book to talk about in advance,
and sometimes make short notes like:

- what it’s about
- what I liked about it
- what words or scenes stayed with me

With just a little preparation,

you start to have more moments where you feel,

“I said that a little better than before.”

You might think,
“Preparing just to talk with friends feels a bit much,”

but when you’ve prepared,

you can feel more confident and relaxed,
and focus on enjoying the conversation.

と聞かれました。

その時、ドキっとしました。

いつもはそういう質問を生徒さんにしているのに、

自分が「答える側」になると、思っていることを言葉にするのは、

意外と難しかったです。

考えることと、それを言葉にすることは、

違うことだと改めて実感しました。

「いいと思った」「面白かった」
そういう気持ちはあるのに、そこから先が出てこない。

みなさんはどうですか？「どう思う？」と聞かれたとき、
すぐに言葉が出てきますか？

「わかるけど言えない」を少しずつ超えていくには、
練習が必要だと感じました。

I recently joined a reading session of *Kokoro* with a Japanese teacher.

I wanted to understand this widely loved novel a little more deeply.

We went through the text slowly, one sentence at a time,

and the host carefully explored each participant’s “sense of discomfort” or questions.

---

At one point, I was asked:

“Why do you think so?”

“What do you think about their opinion?”

---

In that moment,

my heart skipped a beat.

---

I usually ask these kinds of questions to my students,

but when I became the one answering,

I realized how difficult it is to put thoughts into words.

Thinking something

and expressing it in words

might be two different things.

---

“I liked it.”

“It was interesting.”

---

The feeling is there,

but nothing comes after that.

---

How about you?

When someone asks, “What do you think?”

do the words come out right away?

That’s why I started to feel that practice matters—

learning how to go beyond
“I understand, but I can’t say it.”

イギリスの電車で日本語の本を読んでいたら、
隣に座っていた人に日本語で話しかけられたそうです。

いいですよね✨

ちょっと想像してみてください。
そんな場面があったら、

少し嬉しくなりませんか？

でも同時に、少しドキッとするかもしれません。
いざ話しかけられると、「わかるけど、言えない」ということも多いです。

最近書いてきたように、
これは語彙や文法の問題だけではないです。

「どう使うか」を練習したかどうかです。

「日本語で本を読んでるんですか？」
「はい、そうなんです」
「おもしろい？」
「はい！」

で終わったら、少し残念な気持ちになるかもしれないですね。

こういうシーンでちょっと話せるように、
小さなワークショップをします。

テーマは「“おもしろいです！”を分解する」

本をきっかけに

・短く説明する
・思ったことを言ってみる
・相手とやり取りしてみる

をやってみます。

うまく話すことよりも、「あ、今ちょっと言えた」
という瞬間を大事にしたいと思っています。

A student told me this story.

They were reading a Japanese book on the train,

and the person sitting next to them

started talking to them—in Japanese.

Sounds nice, right? ✨

Try to imagine it.

If that happened to you,

wouldn’t you feel a little happy?

But at the same time,

you might feel a bit nervous.

When it actually happens,

many people find themselves thinking:

“I understand… but I can’t respond.”

As I’ve been writing recently,

this isn’t just a vocabulary or grammar issue.

It’s about whether you’ve practiced

how to use what you already know.

“Are you reading a Japanese book?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Is it interesting?”

“Yes!”

If the conversation ends there,

you might feel a little disappointed.

So,

I’m planning a small workshop

to help with moments like this.

The theme is:

Breaking down “It’s interesting!”

Using books as a starting point,

we’ll practice:

saying things a little more clearly

expressing what you think

responding in conversation

It’s not about speaking perfectly.

It’s about having more moments like:

“Oh, I could say that.”

I’ll share more details next week.

日本語の勉強に「いい」とよく聞きますよね。
それぞれ、ちょっとずつ役割が違うと私は考えています。

アニメ・ドラマ → 「あ、この言葉知ってる！」
YouTube → 会話っぽい言い方
本・ラジオ → 言葉のストックが増える

以前、日本語学校で教えていたとき、
同じクラスなのに明らかに差が出る人がいました。

リスニングが強くて、語彙もあって、反応も速い人は

ラジオを聞いている人。

語彙があって、表現が豊かで、文法の使い方がうまい人は

レベルに関係なく本を読んでいる人。

面白いと思ったのは、
特別な勉強をしているわけじゃないことです。

ただ、「好き」で続けているうちに
自然とインプットの量が増えていること。

そして、授業では「見たことがある言葉」や「聞いたことがある言葉」が出てくると、自然に使っていました。

「あ、これ使えそう」

そんな瞬間が少しずつ増えていく感じです。
この経験があるから、私はJapanese Class for Book Loversを続けています。

皆さんは、最近見たアニメや読んだ本で
「いいな」と思った言葉を思い出せますか？
もしよければ、それを一つ実際に使ってみてください。

日記や独り言でも大丈夫です。

私はこういう時、「なるほどー！」で終わっちゃうんですが、
もしよければ、やってみてくださいね。

Anime, YouTube, manga, dramas, books.
We often hear that they’re all “good” for learning Japanese.
I think each of them plays a slightly different role.

Anime & dramas → “Oh, I know this word!”
YouTube → more conversational expressions
Books & radio → building a stock of words

When I was teaching at a Japanese language school,
I noticed something interesting.

Even in the same class,some students clearly improved more than others.

Students with strong listening skills, rich vocabulary, and quick reactions
were usually the ones who listened to a lot of radio.

Students with strong vocabulary, expressive language, and flexible use of grammar
were often reading books—regardless of their level.

What I found interesting was thatthey weren’t doing anything special.

They just kept going,because they liked it.

And over time,their input naturally increased.

In class, when they heard or saw a word they recognized,they used it.

Like:“Oh, I could use this.”

Those moments slowly added up.

This is one of the reasons I continue running Japanese Class for Book Lovers.

Can you remember a word or phrase you liked from something you recently watched or read?

If you can, try using just one of them.

It can be in a journal, or even just talking to yourself.

I often stop at just thinking,“Oh, that’s interesting…”

but if you feel like it, try using just one.

もしかすると、
「えーと、、静かで、、、、素敵で、、、、、」
みたいに、少し止まったかもしれません。

でも、大丈夫です。

例えば、
「静かで、コーヒーの香りがよかった」

難しい言葉は使っていません。
文法もシンプルな文法です。
でも、少し伝わり方が変わります。

もう一つやってみましょう。
最近「いい！」と思ったことを思い出してみてください。

そして、「いい」を使わずに言ってみてください。

少しだけ、考える時間が必要だったと思います。
このとき起きているのは、「知らない」ではなく
「取り出せない」状態です。

もし言葉が出てこなかったら、

・似ている言葉を探す
・簡単な言葉に言い換える

いつもやっていることかもしれません。
でも、「アウトプット以外の時」にこの小さな練習を繰り返すと、

「知っている言葉」が少しずつ「使える言葉」に変わっていきます。

ただ、この練習は、
一人だとズレ続けることがあります。

「良い言葉だけど、実際伝わるかどうかわからない」
「なんとなく合っている気がする」

と、「使えそう」な言葉を使う「自信が持てない」状態になることがあります。

レッスンでは、
・短いボイスダイアリー
・一週間、使う言葉を決める

などを通して、
「使う → ずれる → 気づく → 修正する」
この流れを一緒に作っています。

…How was it?

Maybe something like:
“Umm… it was… quiet… and… kind of… nice…”

You might have paused a little.
That’s okay.

For example:
“It was quiet, and I liked the smell of coffee.”

No difficult vocabulary.
Simple grammar.
But it feels different, doesn’t it?

Let’s try one more.

Think of something you recently thought was “good.”
Now—

try to describe it without using “good.”

You probably needed a moment.
What’s happening here is not that you don’t know—
but that you can’t access it right away.

If the words don’t come out,look for something close
or say it in a simpler way

You may already do this sometimes.
But when you repeat this small practice

outside of real conversations,
something starts to change.

Words you “know” gradually become words you can use.

There’s just one problem.

If you do this alone,
you can keep drifting slightly off.

You might think:
“This sounds okay… I guess?”
“It feels right… maybe?”

But you’re not sure if it actually works.
And that’s where confidence gets stuck.

In my lessons, we work with things like:
short voice diaries
choosing words to actively use for a week

and build a cycle:

use → drift → notice → adjust

That’s how passive knowledge starts turning into something usable.

someone was able to speak with a native Japanese speaker,

① 好きなものが好きなだけだから、楽しく伝える

日本語で
「ちょっとミーハーなんだけど」と前置きするとき、
多くの場合は③に近い感情です。

ただ、完全にネガティブというよりも少し笑いながら言うことが多いです。

例えば
「ちょっとミーハーなんだけど、今めっちゃ鬼滅の刃にハマっててね…」
「意外とミーハーで、みんなが読んでる本があると気になっちゃうんだよね」

ここには「ちょっと恥ずかしい」という気持ちと同時に「でも楽しいんだよね」
という気持ちも入っています。

（すごく日本語らしい表現ですね👀）

私は結構③の気持ちになるので、
「ミーハー」という言葉は便利でありがたいなと思っています。

ちょっと会話例を書いておこうかな👇

A：ちょっとミーハーなんだけどさ、この本（ベストセラー）やっぱり買っちゃた！
B：へー！！！いいじゃん、いいじゃん！どうだった？？？
A：いやぁ、やっぱり、すごくよかったよ！！！

で、来週はこの、「すごくよかった！！！」を言語化することについて書く予定です。また来週！

“I’m kind of being a bit miihā…”
Have you ever heard this expression?

When you want to say
“I like things that are popular,”how does it feel for you?

① You just like what you like, so you say it happily
② You say it in a neutral, matter-of-fact way
③ You want to say it happily, but it feels a little embarrassing—like you’re just following trends

In Japanese, when someone starts with

“I’m kind of being a bit miihā…”it’s often closest to feeling ③.
But it’s not completely negative.
People often say it with a slight smile.

For example:
“I know it sounds a bit miihā, but I’m really into Demon Slayer right now…”
“I guess I’m kind of miihā—when everyone’s reading a book, I start wanting to read it too.”

So there’s a mix of feelings here:
“A little embarrassing,” but also “…but it’s fun, you know.”

(It feels like a very Japanese kind of expression 👀)

I personally feel closest to ③,
so I find the word miihā really useful—and kind of comforting.

Let me share a quick example conversation👇

A: I know this sounds a bit miihā, but I ended up buying this bestseller after all!
B: Ohhh nice!!! That’s great! How was it???
A: Honestly… it was really, really good!!!

実は本を読んでいる生徒さんから
「“○○とつっこんだ”“○○とつっこまれた”ってどういう意味ですか？」
と聞かれることがよくあります。

説明はできるのですが, なかなか伝わりません。
「ボケ」はわざとおかしなことを言うこと。
「ツッコむ」はそれに対して指摘することですが、
ただ指摘するだけではなくその場を少しおもしろくする
コミュニケーションでもあります。

文字にするとなんだかよくわからないですね。

こういう「ツッコミ」は説明されるよりも
実際に会話の中で体験すると少しずつ分かってきます。

「今、ツッコんでほしいな」と思う瞬間があっても
そのまま流れていくことがあります。

この「ボケ」と「ツッコミ」は漫才を見るとよくわかります。

漫才は「ボケ」担当と「ツッコミ」担当がいます。

多分、みなさんの言語でも
こういう「ツッコミ」に近いことをしていると思います。

普段の会話の中で「これがツッコミかな？」と
ちょっとアンテナを張ってみてくださいね。

「ボケ」と「ツッコミ」のリズムが
自然に出てくる小説が『成瀬は天下を取りに行く』です。

この小説には会話のテンポや距離感が
そのまま出てきます。

In this week’s YouTube video, we talked about Kansai dialect, and the topic of boke
and tsukkomi came up.

When my students read books, they often ask me:
“What does it mean when it says
‘○○ to tsukkomu’ or
‘○○ to tsukkomareta’?”

I can explain it,but it’s surprisingly hard to really convey.
Boke means　saying something intentionally silly or off.

Tsukkomu means　pointing that out,
but it’s not just pointing it out—it’s also a way of making the moment more interesting or lively.

When you try to explain it in words,
it somehow becomes unclear.

This kind of “tsukkomi”is something you understand not by explanation,
but by experiencing it in real conversations.

There are moments when you think,
“Someone should tsukkomu here,”but the conversation just moves on.
You can understand this dynamic more easily by watching manzai.

In manzai, there is a boke role and a tsukkomi role.

I think in your language as well,
there are similar ways of reacting in conversations.

In your daily conversations,
try noticing: “Was that a tsukkomi?”

A novel where this rhythm of boke and tsukkomi appears naturally is

“Naruse wa Tenka wo toriniiku.”

You can feel the pacing and distance of conversation through the story.

今週のYouTubeより。
つん先生との会話で「おもしろい！」と思ったことがありました。

それは生卵とゆで卵、どちらが食べるのが簡単か？という話。

もちろん、皆さんの中には

「生卵は食べられない」という人もいると思います。

それはちょっと置いておいて…

私は生卵の方が料理をしなくていいから「簡単」と思っていました。

でも、つん先生は違いました。

「ゆで卵の方がお皿を使わずにそのまま食べられるから効率的」

とのこと。

つまり、つん先生にとっては生卵の方がゆで卵よりハードルが高い食べ物。
そしてさらに、「ゆで卵の方が沢山食べられる！」とも言っていました。

こういう瞬間ってたまらないですよね。

（わたしだけ！？）

同じ「かんたん」でも人によって全然違う。
こういう小さな違いを見つけるのが人との関りで楽しいと感じます。

皆さんはどんな風に卵を食べるのが一番「かんたん」と感じますか？
そしてどんな食べ方だと一番たくさん卵を食べられますか？

What counts as “efficient” can be very different depending on the person.

In this week’s YouTube video, I had a conversation with Tsun-sensei that I found really interesting.

We talked about a simple question:

Which is easier to eat — a raw egg or a boiled egg?

Of course, some of you might be thinking,
“I can’t eat raw eggs.”

Let’s set that aside for a moment.

I had always thought that a raw egg was easier, because you don’t need to cook anything.

But Tsun-sensei had a completely different idea.

He said,

“A boiled egg is more efficient because you can eat it directly without using a plate.”

In other words, for Tsun-sensei, a raw egg is actually more difficult to eat than a boiled egg.

He even added,

“I can eat more eggs when they’re boiled!”

Moments like this are irresistible to me.

(Or is it just me?)

Even something as simple as “easy” can mean completely different things to different people.

Discovering these small differences is one of the things that makes interacting with others so enjoyable.

The final book in my Spring Reading series
is Hankyu Densha.

Hankyu Densha

The season is never clearly stated in the novel.
But from small hints—like a mention of swallows
and the clothes the characters wear—
I somehow felt that it was spring.

In Japan, swallows are often associated with
late spring—
the warmest and most comfortable time of the season.

In this novel,
different people’s lives briefly intersect on a train,
influence one another,
and then move apart again.

In the short time of a train ride,
a life shifts just a little.

And one more thing!

Along the Hankyu railway line,
there are many beautiful cherry blossom spots.

I think this combination

was saying they might visit Shiga.

Maybe it’s not quite a “pilgrimage” to story locations,
but traveling to places connected with a story
sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

I was listening to them talk,
thinking how nice that would be.

And with that,
this Spring Reading series comes to an end—for now.

今の季節に読むとぴったりな始まりです。

『アンと青春』は、

ただ季節の行事が描かれるだけの物語ではありません。

ひなまつりや端午の節句といった話題と並行して、
結婚、出産、義理のお母さんとの関係など、
人生の節目が描かれていきます。

その一方で、、、、
アンちゃん自身も、挫折を経験し、
良い友達に励まされ、
少しずつ社会人として成長していきます。

大きな出来事というより、
小さな出来事と、小さな前進。
そしてちょっとドキッとする。

それが、この作品の魅力です。

私はこの本を、
10年以上ぶりに今年読みました。

最初に読んだときは、
アンちゃんの気持ちに共感しながら。

でも今回は、先輩や店長、
そして物語の中では直接描かれない「お嫁さん」に
自然と気持ちを重ねていました。

読む人の立場が変わると、物語の見え方も変わりますよね。

トトロやクレヨンしんちゃんを
大人になってから見ると
新しい発見があるように、
ライフステージが変わってから読むと、
また違う面白さがある作品です。

昔読んだ本を、もう一度読み返したことはありますか？

Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day.

It’s a beginning that feels just right for this season.

Anne to Seishun is not simply a story about seasonal traditions.

Alongside Hinamatsuri and Tango no Sekku,
the novel gently weaves in themes of marriage, childbirth,
and relationships with mothers-in-law —
moments that mark important transitions in life.

At the same time…

Anne herself experiences setbacks,
is encouraged by good friends,
and gradually grows as a working adult.

Rather than dramatic events,
it is made up of small moments, small steps forward —
and the occasional flutter of the heart.

That is the charm of this novel.

I reread this book this year
for the first time in over ten years.

When I first read it,
I closely related to Anne’s feelings.

This time, however,
I found myself thinking about the senior staff, the manager,
and even the unseen “bride” mentioned in the story.

When the reader’s position changes,
the way a story appears also changes.

Just like watching My Neighbor Totoro or Crayon Shin-chan as an adult
and discovering something new,
this is a novel that reveals different layers
as your life stage shifts.

なんと『こころ』を最後まで読み終えることが出来ました！
あと5回くらい読んだら魅力がわかるようになるかもしれない、、、というのが感想です。
今回はあとがきを読んで「なるほど！」そういう風に出来た作品なのか。
と、背景も理解できました。

there have been days when I felt that spring was near.
But today was truly warm.

Being able to ride my bicycle
without a heavy coat
made me unreasonably happy.

On a day like this,
this series came to mind.

📚 Oishii Coffee no Irekata: Kisu Made no Kyori
(from the Oishii Coffee no Irekata series)

It is written by Yuka Murayama,
the author of PRIZE,
which has been nominated for this year’s Bookseller Award.

This was one of the books
that led me from shōjo manga into novels.

The story begins in the spring of a high school senior year.

Because of his father’s job transfer,
the protagonist begins living
with his cousin and her younger brother.

And—
his cousin happens to be
the new art teacher at his school.

If you enjoy shōjo manga
or romance novels,
isn’t that an irresistible setup?

The atmosphere of spring,
and the beginning of love.

The fact that the series itself begins in spring
makes it feel perfect for this season.

It might be enjoyable
to read it alongside this year’s nominated titles.

I finally finished reading Kokoro!

To be honest, I feel like I might need to read it
five more times before I fully understand its charm.

This time, reading the afterword helped me think,
“Oh, I see—that’s how this work was constructed.”
Understanding the background gave me a new perspective.

Next, I wonder if reading a non-learner English edition
might deepen my understanding even more.

この2つを試してみている、今の変化です。

『エミリー、パリへ行く』がとても面白くて、
気づけば30分以上見ています。

このドラマを見ていて気づいたのは、
英語が母語の人が

「困っている場面」
「恥ずかしそうにしている場面」
「新しい環境に慣れていく場面」

を、じっくり観察する機会が
これまであまりなかった、ということです。

そういったシーンのちょっとしたフレーズが面白くて、
「そういうふうに言うんだ！」
という発見があります。

一方で、「1日25分、英語を読む」。

こちらは、ドラマほど気軽ではありません。

週の始めははりきって取り組んでいたのですが、
後半忙しくなって止まってしまいました。

このレターを書いたあとに、また開こうと思います。

読んでいるのは、
夏目漱石の『こころ』のリライト版。

日本語で読むと本当に難しくて大変だった作品が、
英語の力を借りることで、半分以上読み進められています。

英語が得意ではない私が、
英語を通して日本語の名作を読んでいる。

ちょっと不思議で、面白い感覚です。

続けていると、ふとした瞬間に、
エミリーの言い回しや仕草が頭に残っていることに気づきます。

日本語を話しているときに、
少しエミリーっぽいリアクションを
しているかもしれません。

「インストールされた」と言うほどではないけれど、
少しずつ、自分の中に溜まっている感覚があります。

もともと影響されやすい性格だからかもしれません。

そんなことを考えていたとき、
レッスンがきっかけで
この季節にぴったりの一冊に再会しました。

Last week, I wrote about “self-study.”
Let me continue that thought.

I’ve been trying two simple things:

30 minutes a day of listening to (or watching) English.
25 minutes a day of reading in English.

Here’s what I’ve noticed so far.

First, the 30 minutes of listening (watching).

I’ve been watching Emily in Paris,
and it’s so enjoyable that I often end up watching more than 30 minutes.

What I realized while watching is that
I’ve rarely had the chance to closely observe native English speakers in moments when they are

“struggling,”
“feeling embarrassed,”
or “adjusting to a new environment.”

Watching those scenes carefully has been surprisingly interesting.

The small phrases they use in those moments make me think,
“Oh, that’s how you say it!”

On the other hand, the 25 minutes of reading.

It hasn’t been as easy as watching a drama.
At the beginning of the week, I was motivated,
but as things got busy, I stopped.

After writing this letter, I plan to open the book again.

I’ve been reading a rewritten version of Kokoro by Natsume Sōseki.

When I tried reading it in Japanese before,
it felt truly difficult and demanding.
But now, with the help of English,
I’ve been able to read more than half of it.

It’s a little strange —
I’m not particularly strong in English,
yet I’m using English to approach a classic of Japanese literature.

It feels both unusual and fascinating.

As I continue,
I sometimes notice that
Emily’s expressions and gestures
linger in my mind.

When I speak Japanese,
I might even react a little like Emily.

I wouldn’t say it’s been “installed,”
but I can feel something slowly accumulating inside me.

Maybe it’s just because I’m easily influenced by what I see.

While thinking about all of this,
I also re-encountered a book that feels perfect for this season,
thanks to one of my lessons.

英語を独学で習得した人が書いた本です。

「アウトプットが大事」と
言われるとプレッシャーに感じてしまうタイプなので、
目に留まりました。

アウトプットの機会が少ない
海外在住の学習者さんにとって、
何かヒントがあるかもしれないとも思いました。

読んでみて、
「この方法なら、今の自分にも実践できそう」
と感じたことがあり、
今、実際に取り組んでいます。

やっているのは、とてもシンプルなことです。

• 1日30分、英語を聞く（見る）

• 1日25分、英語を読む

聞くほうは
『エミリー、パリへ行く』を見ています。

読むほうは、
夏目漱石の『こころ』のリライト版です。

やってみてまず感じたのは、
『エミリー、パリへ行く』が
「おもしろい」と思えたことでした。

主人公のエミリーも、
言葉の壁があるパリでの仕事に奮闘していて、
その姿に、自然と元気をもらいながら
続けられています。

自分の状況に置き換えやすい、
というのも大きいのかもしれません。

一方で、
夏目漱石の『こころ』は、
日本語版が「とても読みやすい本」
というわけではありません。

でも、リライト版を読んでいると、
「なるほど、そういうことを言っていたのか」
と理解しやすく、
楽しく読み進められています。

まだ始めたばかりで、
効果がどうこう言える段階ではありませんが、
今は、このリズムでチャレンジするのが楽しいです。

また続報を書くかもしれません。

I recently read a book called
What People Who Taught Themselves to Speak English Actually Did.

It’s written by someone who learned English on their own.

I’m the kind of person who feels pressure
whenever people say,
“Output is the most important thing,”
so the title immediately caught my eye.

I also thought it might offer some hints
for learners living overseas
who don’t have many opportunities to use the language.

As I read it, there was a moment when I thought,
“This feels doable for me, right now.”

So I decided to try it myself.

What I’m doing is very simple.

I spend 30 minutes a day listening to (or watching) English.
And 25 minutes a day reading English.

For listening, I’m watching Emily in Paris.

For reading, I’m using a rewritten version of
Natsume Sōseki’s Kokoro.

The first thing I noticed was how much I enjoyed Emily in Paris.

The main character, Emily, is also struggling to work in Paris
with a language barrier,
and watching her gives me energy
and makes it easier to keep going.

I think the fact that I can relate her situation to my own
plays a big role.

On the other hand,
Sōseki’s Kokoro is not exactly
an “easy-to-read” book in its original Japanese form.

But with the rewritten version,
I often find myself thinking,
“Oh, so that’s what this part meant,”
and I’m able to read it with more enjoyment.

I’ve only just started,
so it’s too early to talk about results.

But for now,
I’m simply enjoying the rhythm of this challenge.

I might write an update again sometime.

編集よりも、
正直いちばんハードだったのが、
何度も自分の声を聞くことでした……。

それで、自分が話すときの“くせ”に気づいたので、
めちゃくちゃ恥ずかしいですが、
ここでだけ書きます。

いろいろ考えながら話していました。
はい、
めちゃくちゃ「えっと……」って言ってます。

今回、つん先生と話すのは2回目、
YouTubeの撮影としては1回目、
という状況で、
こんな感じの話し方になっていました。

これから、
どんなふうに変わっていくのか。
つん先生との距離感は変わるのか。
敬語を使わなくなるのか。
それとも、ずっとこの感じなのか。

引き続き、観察してみてくださいね。

そして、
みなさんが日本語を話すときのヒントを、

My first YouTube video is finally up.
I struggled quite a bit with the editing,
but somehow managed to publish it.

To be honest, though,
what was harder than editing
was listening to my own voice
over and over again.

And because of that,
I started noticing my own speaking habits.

It’s pretty embarrassing,
but I’ll write about them here.

① I use chotto (“a little”) even when it’s not “a little” at all

Things like:
“Chotto… I was really surprised…”

I realized I use this kind of phrasing
far more often than I thought.

② I say “omoshiroi” (“interesting”) a lot

I really did find many things genuinely interesting,
so that part makes sense.

But while editing, I kept thinking,
“Wow… I say this a lot.”

③ “Etto…”

Etto… is incredibly versatile.

Since this was my first time filming,
I was thinking about many things as I spoke.

Yes —
I say etto… a lot.

This was only the second time
I had spoken with Tsunsensei,
and the first time filming together for YouTube.

Given that situation,
this was the way I ended up speaking.

I wonder how it will change from here.
Will the distance between us shift?
Will I stop using polite language?
Or will it stay like this?

Please keep observing with us.

And I hope that, somewhere in this,
you’ll find even one small hint
for when you speak Japanese yourself.

I value these moments of pausing and noticing language
in my lessons as well.

つん先生は、稲荷神社について
とても自然に話していて、
その距離の近さを感じました。

そして、
「あ、つん先生にとっては、
稲荷神社はとても身近な存在なんだな」
と思いました。

私にとって稲荷神社は、
あまり身近な存在ではありません。

「神社」「お寺」「稲荷神社」「神宮」と並べると、
身近にあるのは「神社」と「お寺」で、
「稲荷神社」や「神宮」は、
雑誌やテレビ、
人から聞く話の中で知るもの、
という感覚です。

でも、つん先生にとっては、
毎年家族で行く場所で、
特別めずらしい場所ではなかったのだと思います。

話を聞きながら、
「稲荷神社」という言葉を聞いたときに
頭の中に広がる景色や、
それにともなう感覚が、
きっと違うんだろうな、と感じました。

その違いがとても面白くて、
違う世界を見ているつん先生から
「稲荷神社」という
私にとっては少し知らない世界の話を聞くのが、
とても楽しかったです。

ただ、今回つん先生と話をするのは2回目だったのと、
初めてのYoutubeの撮影だったので、
リアクションは少し控えめにしていました。
様子を見ていた感じです。

YouTubeを見ていない方も、
ぜひ「稲荷神社」という言葉が出てきたときの
二人の話し方を、
観察するつもりで見てみてください。

The other day, during some casual conversation
while filming a YouTube video,
the topic of Inari shrines came up.

Inari shrines are also known as oinari-san, and foxes are believed to be messengers of the deity.

Tsunsensei talked about Inari shrines
in a very natural way,
and I could feel how close they were to her.

I remember thinking,
“Ah — for her,
Inari shrines are a very familiar presence.”

For me, however, Inari shrines don’t feel quite as close.

If I line up the words
“shrine,” “temple,” “Inari shrine,” and “grand shrine,”
the ones that feel familiar to me are “shrine” and “temple.”
“Inari shrines” and “grand shrines” are places
I mostly know through magazines, television,
or stories I’ve heard from others.

For Tsunsensei, though,
Inari shrines were a place her family visited every year —
not something particularly unusual or special.

As I listened, I realized that
the images and feelings that come to mind
when we hear the word “Inari shrine”
are probably quite different.

That difference was fascinating to me,
and hearing about “Inari shrines”
from someone who sees a different world
was genuinely enjoyable.

Since it was only my second time talking with Tsun-sensei
and also my first time filming for YouTube,
I intentionally kept my reactions a bit restrained.
I was feeling things out.

Even if you haven’t watched the YouTube video,
try observing the way the two of us speak
when the word “Inari shrine” comes up.
